This is a problem I ran into constantly. Each Skill has three components:
- Name – a short label (e.g., “Brand Voice” or “Offer Template”)
- Description – a sentence or two explaining what the Skill does and when to use it
- Instructions – the full procedure: tone guidelines, formatting rules, examples, constraints, step-by-step workflow
The description matters more than you might think. Claude reads the names and descriptions of all your Skills to decide which one applies to the current task. One technical detail worth highlighting: Skills don’t clog Claude’s context window. They’re designed so that Claude reads only the headers and descriptions, then pulls in the relevant Skill’s full instructions on demand. It’s like having a drawer full of procedure manuals, each with a title on the spine. You pull out only the one you need right now, use it, and put it back. This means you can have dozens of Skills active without burning through your available context space.

How Skills differ from Custom GPTs, Projects, and system prompts
Claude Skills, ChatGPT’s Custom GPTs, and Gemini’s Gems all try to solve the same problem: persistent instructions. But they solve it in fundamentally different ways, and those differences matter for daily workflow.
Custom GPTs are self-contained apps. You build one, configure its instructions, and interact with it inside its own dedicated interface. The limitation: if you’re in a regular ChatGPT conversation and want to apply your Custom GPT’s instructions, you can’t. You have to switch to that GPT’s workspace. Your regular chat and your Custom GPT live in separate rooms.
Gemini Gems (and Gemini Projects) work similarly – pre-configured assistants with set instructions, but confined to their own space.
Claude Skills work differently. They’re portable. A Skill isn’t a separate workspace – it’s a set of instructions that any conversation can access. You can be mid-discussion about market trends, decide you want to draft an offer, invoke your Offer Template Skill, then switch to your LinkedIn Writing Skill for a social post – all in the same chat, without leaving, without copy-pasting, without losing context.

The file-based nature of Skills deserves emphasis. A Skill is literally a file. You can download it, email it to a colleague, upload it to a shared drive. Your entire team can work with identical instructions without a week of onboarding. That’s not a minor convenience – for a team of five producing branded content daily, it removes the “everyone interprets the brand book differently” problem almost entirely.
ChatGPT does have a “Memory” feature that persists some context across chats, but it’s passive – it stores fragments of past conversations, not structured procedures. It’s more like the model vaguely remembering you prefer bullet points, not like the model following a 500-word SOP about your exact formatting standards.

Creating your first Skill – step by step
There are three ways to create a Claude Skill: write it manually, upload a pre-made file, or ask Claude to generate one for you. I’ll walk through all three, but the third method – having Claude build the Skill from your existing materials – is the one I use most often.
Method 1: Write it manually. Go to Customize, then Skills. Click the plus icon. Fill in the name, description, and instructions yourself. This works well if you have a clear, concise procedure in mind – say, a 10-line template for email responses.
Method 2: Upload a file. If someone has shared a Skill file with you, or you’ve downloaded one from a template library, click “Upload a Skill,” drag the file in, and it’s ready. In the video, I demonstrate this with a Skill Builder file that I’ve attached in the episode description.
Method 3: Let Claude build it for you. This is where it gets interesting. In a new chat, use the /skill command and describe what you need. In my demonstration, I wrote: “Create a Skill for me that will allow me to create documents consistent with the brand book, details of which I’ve attached.” Then I copied our entire brand book – colors, fonts, spacing rules, tone guidelines – directly into the chat.
A few minutes later, Claude generated a complete Skill named “JAAQOB Brand” with all the visual and tonal guidelines baked in.
The step-by-step walkthrough I used:
- Open Claude and start a new conversation
- Type /skill to activate the Skill creation mode
- Describe the Skill’s purpose clearly: what kind of output it should produce, in what style, with what constraints
- Attach or paste supporting materials (brand book, existing templates, examples of good/bad output)
- Wait for Claude to generate the Skill draft
- Review the output – copy the name, description, and instructions into the Skills section under Customize
- Test the Skill with a real task
- Refine using “Edit with Claude” or manual inline editing
Step 7 and 8 are where most people stop too early. The first version of any Skill is a draft, not a finished product. I follow a Kaizen-style approach: create, test with a real task, note what’s off, refine, test again. After 2-3 iterations, the Skill usually produces output that’s close to what I’d write manually.
The refinement process is straightforward. Go to Customize, Skills, select the Skill, and either edit the text directly (like a notepad) or click “Edit with Claude” and describe what needs to change: “Make the tone more direct,” “Add a constraint about paragraph length,” “Include a rule about never using passive voice in headlines.”
Before and after – same prompt, different results
This is the part that made the biggest impression during my test, and it’s the clearest way to show what Skills actually do in practice.
The scenario: I have a company with a brand book – specific colors, typography, layout rules, communication style. I need Claude to generate a professional Word document.
Without a Skill: I gave Claude a detailed prompt describing the document I needed. It produced a clean, well-structured document. The content was solid. But the visual style was completely generic – colors didn’t match our palette, fonts weren’t ours, the layout followed Claude’s default template. As I said in the video: colors don’t match, fonts don’t match, basically nothing matches. Except the content.
With the JAAQOB Brand Skill: I used the exact same prompt. Same description, same requirements. The output was noticeably different. Colors aligned with our brand book, typography reflected our standards, the overall feel was consistent with what we actually use.
Was it perfect? No. I’ll be honest – it was still noticeably weaker than a document our team spent several hours carefully designing. But the time investment was incomparable. The Skill-assisted version took a few minutes of waiting. The polished original took hours of design work.
The real value isn’t in replacing careful design work. It’s in the 80% of documents that don’t need to be pixel-perfect – internal presentations, draft proposals, quick summaries for partners. For those, “consistent and good enough in five minutes” beats “perfect but takes three hours” every time.
And there’s a compounding effect. Every document generated with the Skill looks the same way. When a colleague downloads that Skill and uses it, their documents match mine. That’s the consistency part that’s hard to achieve any other way without centralized design oversight.

Chaining multiple Skills in a single conversation
One Skill is useful. Multiple Skills used together in the same conversation – that’s where the workflow changes significantly.
Here’s a scenario I walked through in the episode. You’re analyzing an industry article with Claude, discussing market trends. The conversation naturally evolves – a particular trend fits your services well. You decide to create a new offer based on it.
Without Skills, you’d need to JUMP to a different window or paste in your brand voice guidelines, then switch again for the offer template, then again for a LinkedIn post draft. Each switch breaks the flow and risks losing the context you’ve built up.
With Skills, the workflow stays in one place:
- Analysis phase – discuss the article, identify the trend (no Skill needed, just conversation)
- Offer creation – invoke the Brand Voice Skill to write the offer description in your company’s tone
- Document formatting – invoke the Offer Template Skill to structure it according to your standard format
- Social media – invoke the LinkedIn Writing Skill to draft a post announcing the new offer
All of this happens in the same chat. Claude maintains the full context of the conversation, so the LinkedIn post naturally references the specific trend you discussed 20 minutes ago. There’s no copy-pasting between windows, no re-explaining what the offer is about.
You can invoke Skills in two ways: type / and select from the list, or simply describe what you need and let Claude match the right Skill based on its description. In practice, I find the natural language approach more fluid – “now write this up as a LinkedIn post in my usual style” – and Claude picks the right Skill automatically. At least, it does when the Skill descriptions are specific enough to differentiate between them.
I should note this particular multi-Skill workflow wasn’t something I demonstrated end-to-end live in the video. I walked through the concept and showed individual Skills in action. The chaining works as described, but your results will depend on how well your Skills are written and how clearly their descriptions differentiate them.
Sharing Skills across a team
A Claude Skill is a file – a plain, downloadable, shareable file. This simple fact has outsized implications for teams.
The standard problem in any organization using AI: person A prompts Claude one way, person B prompts it differently, person C has their own approach. The outputs are inconsistent. Brand voice drifts. Formatting varies. Someone eventually proposes “let’s write a prompt guide” – which nobody reads, or reads once and then ignores.
Skills solve this mechanically, not procedurally. You download the Skill file, share it via email, Slack, Google Drive, whatever your team uses. Your colleague uploads it to their Claude account. Now both of you are working from identical instructions. Not “similar” – identical. The same rules, the same constraints, the same output format.
In practical terms, this means a team of five can produce content that reads like it came from one person – without a week of brand voice training, without a style guide that sits in a folder untouched, without a manager reviewing every draft for tone consistency.
There are limits, though. Skills are only as good as the instructions inside them. If your Skill says “write in a professional tone” and nothing more, you’ll get five different interpretations of “professional.” The more specific and structured the instructions – with examples of good and bad output, with explicit rules about vocabulary and sentence length, with formatting templates – the more consistent the results across different users.
A note on security. Like any AI tool, Claude should be used thoughtfully. Standard emails, offers, summaries, public-facing content – that’s fine. But data covered by NDAs, sensitive financial information, proprietary algorithms – I’d advise caution. Everyone makes their own decision here, but be aware that what you put into a Skill becomes part of your interaction with the platform. Claude’s Pro plan costs $20 per month. Skills are accessible in the free tier for basic testing, though the free plan has message limits and doesn’t include the most capable model versions(as of march 2026).
Let me walk through the math I used in the video, with a small correction.
Say you create one branded document per day. Without a Skill, it takes around 40 minutes – prompting, specifying tone, adjusting formatting, iterating. With a Skill that already contains your brand guidelines, the same document takes roughly 20 minutes. That’s a 20-minute saving per day.
Over 20 working days in a month: 20 minutes x 20 days = 400 minutes = approximately 6 hours and 40 minutes. In the video, I rounded that up to 8 hours, which is a bit generous – call it roughly one workday saved per month, depending on how you define a workday. At $20/month, that’s $3 per hour of time recovered. For most knowledge workers, that’s a no-brainer.
But that’s just one Skill, one task. In reality, most professionals handle multiple recurring tasks: client emails, proposals, social posts, meeting summaries, internal documentation. If you have 4-5 Skills covering these workflows, the cumulative savings multiply. Even conservatively, we’re talking about 2-3 workdays per month.

Getting the most out of Skills – practical tips
Knowing how to create a Skill is one thing. Getting consistent, high-quality output from it is another. Here are the patterns I’ve found work best after building and refining several Skills.
Be absurdly specific in your instructions. “Write in a professional tone” is nearly useless. Instead: “Write in short paragraphs (2-4 sentences max). Use active voice. Never use the words ‘synergy,’ ‘leverage,’ or ‘holistic.’ Start every email with the recipient’s first name, not ‘Dear.'” The more explicit the rules, the less room for interpretation.
Include examples. If you want Claude to write LinkedIn posts in your style, paste 3-5 actual posts you’ve written into the Skill instructions with a note: “These are examples of my writing style. Match the tone, sentence length, and level of directness.” Examples teach patterns that abstract rules can’t fully capture.
Name and describe Skills precisely. Since Claude uses names and descriptions to match Skills to tasks, vague labels cause problems. “Writing Style” could be anything. “LinkedIn Post – Paweł Nejman voice – B2B AI content” tells Claude exactly when to use it.
Iterate ruthlessly. Generative AI has the theoretical potential to automate 60-70% of the working time employees currently spend on tasks like writing emails or responding to clients.
Don’t overload a single Skill. If you try to cram brand voice, document formatting, content strategy, and social media guidelines into one Skill, the instructions become too long and conflicting. Split them. One Skill per distinct task or output type. Remember, you can chain them in a single conversation anyway.
